PlanBlue, the Bremen-based start-up that has operationalized underwater hyperspectral imaging over the past 5 years, is one of the winners of the UpLink Ocean Data Challenge. The winners were announced today at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Switzerland. The challenge called for companies to demonstrate applications for ocean data to boost ocean conservation and promote the sustainable blue economy. PlanBlue conducts detailed surveys of the seafloor and converts the data gathered with its sensors into information products using Machine Learning. Our first generation of products gives insight in the health of seagrass meadows and the amount of carbon they store, creating a substantial overlap between planblue’s work and vision and the Ocean Data Challenge.
PlanBlue GmbH selected among the 11 innovative winners of the UpLink World Economic Forum Ocean Data Challenge
“This win is testament to the importance of putting the seafloor on the map and we are immensely honored to be part of the cohort of winners," said planblue co-Founder & CEO Joost den Haan. “Thanks to the combined power of the DiveRay, our underwater surveying platform, and the SeafloorAtlas, our cloud-based, AI-driven data analysis platform, we can offer a new generation of information products at significantly reduced lead times," adds co-Founder & CSO Dr. Hannah Brocke. “Our vision is to make a step-change improvement to the traditional seafloor monitoring approach of divers taking pictures and notes, and to instead introduce advanced imaging, image processing, underwater navigation, and survey-planning technologies."
PlanBlue is preparing for a series-A funding round. We look forward to collaborating with the other winners, connecting with stakeholders, and continuing to contribute to a better, healthier ocean.
We combine hyperspectral imaging, precise underwater navigation and AI-based automated data processing to ground-truth satellite, aerial and hydrographic imagery to scale nature-based solutions.
